Mass Spectrometric Set-up
For targeted metabolomics usually multi-methods are used. The most common set-up is the use of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer in the multiple reaction monitoring mode (MRM) or selected ion monitoring (SIM). Depending on the sample type either liquid chromatography (LC) or gas chromatography (GC) systems are used. Our LC-MS/MS systems can either use electrospray ionization (ESI) or atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). In most cases ESI works best, but for some analytes APCI is the method of choice. Our GC-MS/MS system is equipped with an electron ionization (EI), a chemical ionization (CI) and a negative chemical ionization (NCI) source.
